Technical Report: Problem Statement & Purpose Statement

Problem statement:

According to National Environment Agency (NEA), the amount of food waste Singapore generates has increased by 50%, over the past 10 years. This has caused the space in Semakau Landfill to run out exponentially. According to an interview with Mr Wilson, a member of the management committee of Singapore Institute Technology (SIT) (Food Canopy), SIT (Food Canopy) disposes an estimated of 200kg of food waste every week and does not have any waste recycling system in place. This contributes to the increasing food waste Singapore generates.

Purpose Statement:

The purpose of this proposal is to suggest to SIT and Food Canopy management to implement Organic Recycling Compost in SIT (Dover). The secondary purpose is for SIT to establish itself as a role model and influence other institutions to recycle food waste. In the long run, food wastage will reduce across many institutions, and this will ultimately slow down the rate of space running out in Semakau Landfill.
